Your weekly material digest. Each week our Research Team digs into a material category, benchmarking several products to understand and explain major environmental and health issues for each. This is also an exercise in transparency - our research is based entirely on publicly available information. If a manufacturer claims to source FSC Certified wood, or produce 35% recycled content products, we do the necessary due diligence to verify these claims. Leukemia link to home decor

A STUDY of children with leukemia found that half came from homes decorated or furnished with materials which did not meet environmental standards.

Researchers in a project by Shanghai Children's Medical Center and Shanghai Environmental Protection Industry Association visited the homes of 30 children with leukemia last year. They discovered that at the time 15 of the children showed symptoms or were diagnosed with the disease, their homes contained furniture or were decorated with materials with excessive formaldehyde discharge.

HKGBC Launches BEAM Plus Version 1.1

The BEAM green building label officially launched in November 2009, including comprehensive environmental assessment schemes for New Buildings and Existing Buildings. Building on feedback from stakeholders, the BEAM Faculty has made minor improvements to assessment criteria. BEAM Plus Version 1.1 launched on April 1st, 2010 and replace the previous BEAM Plus criteria.
