Description:

One of the first examples of modern rammed earth construction in Sri Lanka, this meditation centre near the sacred city of Anuradhapura has all walls constructed from structural rammed earth. Using a base material of locally sourced kabuk earth and a low cement proportion of about 6% for load bearing walls and 4% for non-load bearing, a compression ratio was achieved of 1.65. The roof is made from Durra boards, a compressed rice straw board made in Sri Lanka from waste materials.
