After finishing the construction, Liling library will be the first green building in Liling and even among Zhuzhou area, and it will also be a good case for sustainable design education.

Following the terrain and trees of site, the building has a entrance hall amongst the tree which also connect the north and south part of library. That means students have to go through a "forest" before entering the library. There are two ceiling holes at the entrance hall, which exactly prepared for two trees at site. The flooring of entrance hall is rose up for better ventilation of both building and two trees.

Resource saving strategy is used for this building, which listed as followed:
1. Building reuse. There are two 3-storey old building on the site: one is a small library built at 1980's, one is a even older building used as staff dormitory. As the building layout and structure of staff dormitory no longer meet the new library requirement, thus demolish is required. However, the waste material like brick is recycled for new construction, saving the material while reducing the waste.
The main structure of the small library is kept, while others are renovated according to the new library's function and design. Compared to the demolish, reusing the building saving 30% investment, while saving the resource, reducing the pollution and shortening the construction period.
2. With flat slabs floor structure and lightweight partition, the building is easy to be changed for other use in the future. At the meanwhile, the flat slabs structure helps reduce the building height, ensuring the sunlight for the trees.
3. Plain concrete is used for both building structure and facade decoration, saving the material resource while reducing the building weight.
4. Water saving. Rain water is recycled for plant irrigation. Water efficient appliance is used for bathroom.
5. Waste ceramic reuse. Liling city is well know for its porcelain, and it is also called "chia city". Although a lot of waste porcelain is produced every year. "Waste ceramic concrete" technology is proposed for this project, waste ceramic is either used for concrete aggregates, or ground as additives for the concrete. It is said that 30% cement is reduced for this technology.

A lot of attention is paid for the environmental protection, the initiatives is taken as followed:
1. Expand the green area. Site alive is critical for green design. Vertical and green roof is used for Liling library, as a result, the green area is expanded from 1850 sqm to 2450 sqm, which will be 67% of the whole site.
2. Biodiversity. The trees, especially the trees over 10-year old, is carefully protected. Existing hard surface around the tree is replaced with earth or grass.
3. Water ecology. Most of the site surface is natural earth (which is permeable). Permeable paving is used for hard surface, allowing the rain water go through the earth, replenishing the water underground.

The goal of this building is to achieve the 2 star level of China green building label. Followed is the potential items which to meet 2 star requirement:
Land Saving and Outdoor Environment
1. No light pollution for the surrounding environment
2. The building layout and material is good for noise reduction
3. Reasonable building layout, optimizing the micro-environment
4. Optimize the public traffic
5. Permeable surface
6. Green roof is used for roofing insulation, reducing the heat-island effect

Energy Saving
1. Itemly calculation for the energy consumption equipment, such as heating/cooling resource, lighting, ect
2. Building designed for day lighting in winter, natural ventilation in summer
3. Thermal performance of building envelope meets the national energy saving standards
4. Lighting power density meet the national lighting standard
5. Air tightness of the building window meets the related requirement

Water Saving and Water Resource
1. Itemly calculation for different water usage, managing the water and avoiding the waste
2. Use water efficient sanitary appliance
3. Rain water recycled for landscaping irrigation, road washing
4. Water efficient irrigation method

Material Saving and Material Resource
1. Building design without too many decorative constuction element
2. Building construction and fit-up should be considered together, do not destroy or demolish the building construction element when in fit-up
3. Flexible partition layout, reducing the waste producing from re-layout

Indoor Environment Quality
1. Reasonable insulation
2. Pollution of indoor air quality
3. Indoor noise
4. Indoor illumination, unified glare value and color rendering index meet the national lighting standard
5. Reasonable indoor layout reducing the noise
6. Main entrance and major activity space has barrier-free facilities
